If any of these sound familiar, you are not alone — and there may be a better solution than living with the pain:

Pain

Pain that gets worse with walking, climbing stairs, or standing

Activity Limitations

Feeling like you’re missing out on activities you used to enjoy

Stiffness

Stiffness that makes it hard to get in and out of the car

Non-surgical Treatments

Injections or physical therapy — that are no longer helping

These are signs that the cartilage (the cushioning tissue between your hip bones) has broken down. When cartilage wears away, bones rub together, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation. Hip replacement surgery replaces the damaged joint with a new one designed to move like your natural hip — without the pain.

HIP JOINT

Understanding Your Hip Joint

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The rounded top of your thigh bone (femur) fits into a cup-shaped socket in your pelvis (acetabulum). A layer of smooth cartilage covers both surfaces, allowing the joint to move easily and absorb impact.

As the body ages — or after injury — that cartilage gradually wears down. Once it is gone, it cannot grow back. The result is bone rubbing on bone: painful, stiff, and progressively worse over time.

Modern hip replacement surgery removes the damaged surfaces and replaces them with high-performance implants that restore smooth, pain-free movement.

Robotic-Assisted Direct Superior, Total Hip Replacement

The damaged ball-and-socket joint is replaced with a custom-fitted prosthesis. Dr. Gough uses the MAKOplasty® robotic-assisted Direct Superior approach — a muscle-sparing technique that eliminates post-surgery restrictions and allows most patients to walk the same day.

Robotic-Assisted Revision, Total Hip Replacement

If a previous hip replacement is causing pain, instability, or reduced motion, a revision procedure may be needed. Dr. Gough specializes in complex revision cases and has performed thousands of revision surgeries in his career.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Gough Surgical FAQs

We know you might have questions about hip replacement — here are the ones we get asked the most, answered simply.

Hip Replacement FAQs

The right procedure depends on your age, activity level, diagnosis, and anatomy. Dr. Gough offers MAKOplasty® Total Hip Replacement using the Direct Superior approach --- his minimally invasive, muscle-sparing technique --- and Revision Hip Replacement for patients whose prior surgery isn\'t working. During your consultation, Dr. Gough will review your imaging and walk you through every option in plain language. He will never recommend surgery unless it is the right choice for you.

Total hip replacement is one of the most studied and successful procedures in all of orthopaedic medicine. In the hands of an experienced, specialized surgeon, outcomes are excellent. Dr. Gough has performed more than 8,000 hip and knee replacements since 2013 and will walk you through the specific risks, benefits, and realistic expectations for your individual case before any decision is made.

Recovery timelines vary by procedure. With Dr. Gough\'s MAKOplasty® robotic-assisted Direct Superior technique for total hip replacement, most patients walk the same day as surgery and return to light activity within a few weeks. More complex procedures, such as revision hip replacement, take longer. Dr. Gough will give you a realistic, personalized timeline during your consultation - including specific milestones for your procedure.

Body weight is a factor in candidacy and recovery, but it does not automatically disqualify anyone from surgery. Dr. Gough evaluates each patient individually. He will discuss how your weight may affect surgical risk, recovery, and implant longevity—and help you understand all available options.

For most primary hip replacement patients using Dr. Gough\'s minimally invasive MAKOplasty® technique, surgery is performed as an outpatient or with a brief overnight stay, and patients go home the same day or within 24 hours. Revision hip replacement patients typically stay 1 to 2 nights for monitoring. Dr. Gough will set clear expectations based on your specific procedure.

Great questions to bring to your first consultation include: "Am I a candidate for the less-invasive Direct Superior approach with MAKOplasty®?" What are the risks specific to my age and health history? How long will my implant last given my activity level? What does recovery look like for someone with my lifestyle? What happens if I need revision surgery in the future? Dr. Gough welcomes every question and takes time with every patient.
